How your Hamilton Dentists Floss Their Teeth

Could you use a little practice when it comes to mastering the important technique of flossing?

Flossing is an important part in your arsenal to combat against plaque and oral bacteria. It definitely requires proper technique to achieve an adequate clean between the teeth. It’s easy to floss incorrectly… but it’s also so easy to floss the right way once you get the hang of it.

With that said, our Hamilton dentist wants to make sure you know your stuff when it comes to flossing. Follow these rules to ensure you’re getting the most out of your routine:

  1. When utilizing conventional dental floss, begin by taking off about 18 inches of floss. Twist the greater part of the string around your center fingers, whatever feels best to you, and keep about an inch to two of floss free.
  2. Take the little area of floss and hold it solidly between your forefingers and thumbs, at that point slide it delicately down and up between your teeth. Unroll another segment of floss from one hand each time you proceed onward to another tooth… you would prefer not to move microscopic organisms starting with one tooth then onto the next! That is simply inefficient.
  3. Bend the floss around every tooth base in a "C" shape, trying to bring it underneath the gum line. Utilize delicate crisscross movements to stay away from injury to the gums. Never snap the floss or use power, as this may harm the gums or cause them to bleed. Ouch!

There’s a world of dental floss out there…

Flossing once per day is what most dentists recommend to combat against gum disease. What’s great about flossing is that there’s a variety of different floss types available to suit your preferences. Successful flossing can be accomplished utilizing conventional floss, floss picks, or interdental brushes. Even oral irrigators (floss water jets) are able to clean out plaque and food particles from below the gum line when used correctly. It all depends on what your preferences for flossing are!
